In this area, we will study the way music of the Common Practice Period
(roughly Bach through Wagner) is constructed. The student will gain a
thorough understanding of tonality, modality, scales, keys, intervals, chords,
modes, harmony, finding chords for a given melody, construction of three and
four part vocal harmonies, and much more.
If this study is being pursued in conjunction with instrumental or vocal study,
all of the insights gained into theory will concurrently be applied to the instrument
or to singing.
