In this area of concentration, melody, harmony and lyrics will all be studied.
Professional songwriting habits will be discussed and encouraged. Techniques
that may bolster creativity will be explored. The student will examine methods and
techniques used to write good lyrics, including study of such topics as: rhyme schemes,
use of imagery and other poetic devices, story line development, and much more. We
will also look at techniques and methods that may be used to construct good, catchy
melodies; finding the "hook" in a popular song; many different song structures, etc.
Finally, we'll learn how to choose the best chords (when harmonizing a melody) to
work synergistically with the lyrics and melody
to effectively communicate the
songwriter's message.
